Overview

“Shooting Stars”
So many desires revolve around these two simple words. A bringer of luck, a fulfiller of wishes and a magical wonder, these streaks in the sky lit up our hearts every time we see it. But what are these shooting stars? Are these the broken pieces of stars falling down?

For starters, “shooting stars” are a misguided term. These streaks of light are actually broken little pieces of rock and dust, which, when close to the Earth, enter its atmosphere at blinding speeds, and heats up, glows and burns down. These debris, know as Meteors are smaller than a grain of sand, so almost all of them disintegrate and never hit the Earth's surface.

The Lyrid meteor shower has the distinction of being among the oldest of known meteor showers. Records of this shower go back for some 2,700 years. The ancient Chinese are said to have observed the Lyrid meteors “falling like rain” in the year 687 BC. Originating from the comet Thatcher, the higher frequency of the meteor shower is seen when Earth crosses the orbital path of the comet. Bits and pieces shed by this comet litter its orbit and bombard the Earth’s upper atmosphere at 177,000 kilometers (110,000 miles) per hour. The vaporizing debris streaks the nighttime with medium-fast Lyrid meteors.

The best time to observe these Meteor showers are right before dawn. So this weekend, let’s spend the night looking out for them and observe these astronomical wonders.

But while observing these Meteors, always remember Murphy’s law. "The moment you look away from the sky, a shooting star will appear.”

So let’s go and wish upon a shooting star!!
